Petoskey earns pair of first at BNC Championships, Charlevoix wins LMC title

TRAVERSE CITY — Throughout the season, competitive matchups have filled the mats of Big North Conference wrestling matches.

So when the Big North Conference championships recently took place, much of the same was expected and that’s exactly what took place.

Also as expected, Gaylord pulled in the overall team championship with a 186.5 finish, followed by Cadillac’s 153; Traverse City Central, 138; Petoskey, 121.5; Traverse City West, 86.5; and Alpena, 16.

Petoskey pulled in two first place weight class finishes at 150 pounds from Brendan Swiss and 157 pounds from Trevor Swiss, then also earned three runner-up finishes and six other finishes inside fifth place.

For Brendan Swiss at 150 pounds, a first round bye was followed by a pin win over TC West, then a first place 3-1 decision over Gaylord’s Gus James.

Trevor Swiss of 157 pounds came out of his bye with a victory over TC Central, then a  4-3 decision over Gaylord’s Zane Willobee in the championship match was won by Swiss.

The title for Trevor Swiss kept him unbeaten in his final season heading into districts, as he moved to 37-0.

At 144 pounds, Jaden VanderWall placed second with a win over TC West and a loss in the finals to TC Central, while Ryan Cook at 126 pounds was also second, falling to Cadillac in the championship round.

Also runner-up was Connor Grebe of 175 pounds, who defeated TC Central, before a first place loss to Gaylord’s Brayden Gautreau.

Petoskey’s Maksym Malkowski of 106 pounds earned a third place finish with a leap out of the consolation round and a victory in the third place match over Alpena, winning by pin.

Adam Goodwin also rebounded fro a semifinal loss to come back and win the third place round with a pin win over TC West at 285 pounds. Corbin Grebe of 165 pounds place third as well

Placing fourth for the Northmen were also Zahar Rush of 138 pounds, Mitchell Gregory of 190 pounds and Gavin Phillips of 215.

LMC CHAMPIONSHIPS 

Rayders capture LMC crown in Boyne City

BOYNE CITY — The annual Lake Michigan Conference championships took place over the weekend with Charlevoix continuing its dominant season with a team title.

Charlevoix also led the way with six first team all-conference weight class spots.

Charlevoix earned the title with 124.5 points, followed by TC St. Francis, 93.5; Grayling, 85; Boyne City, 39.5; and Kalkaska, 16.

The Rayders had multiple wrestlers come away with an undefeated day, which included a 5-0 day from Trevor Streeter at 215 pounds, Jamie Parrish (144) and Brady Jess (175) each finished 4-0 and earned their weight class title, then Ellery Smith (150) and Landon Swanson (190) were also 3-0 and earned first place finishes.

Sawyer Blasczyzk (215) was also 4-1, placing second overall for honorable mention all-conference, Ben Matter (190) placed second at 2-1, Logan Wilks (144) was a second place finisher and Sam Fry (138) placed second at 1-1.

Adam Streeter (285), Justin Whisler (165) Jimmy Descamps (120) and Max Reynolds (113) all took third place.

For Boyne City, Mason Riccinto went 3-1 through the 106 pound class and earned first team all-conference, Thomas Ager was a third place finisher and earned two wins and Logan Riley earned a pair of wins at 215 and placed fourth.
