Petoskey hosts youth wrestling finals, three locals earn medals
PETOSKEY — There’s a lot to look forward to within the Petoskey wrestling program.
And that goes for from the high school ranks all the way down to the youth levels.
Petoskey High School recently enjoyed one of its best campaigns in recent seasons on the mat, while sending three athletes through to the Division 2 individual finals.
Petoskey also captured a district championship as a team only a season ago and Northmen senior Trevor Swiss recently pulled in the first-ever individual unbeaten state title at the school.
That same success is echoed within the local youth organizations and it was highlighted late in the season at the North East Michigan Wrestling Association (NEMWA) state tournament.
Hosted by Petoskey High School, the NEMWA finals took place the final week of February with six Petoskey wrestling qualifying their way into the tournament, which featured 560 wrestlers from across the state.
Those who qualified included Hunter Cole, Konstantin Rush, Caleb Dunkel, William Laura, Sam Rieder and Weston Pauly.
Of those six, three earned medals, with Cole placing third within his weight class, Laura also placed third and Rush was a fourth place finisher.
Petoskey featured 18 wrestlers on its youth team this season, many with just two years or less of experience.
