Petoskey plans Arbor Day celebration on May 13

PETOSKEY — Petoskey is celebrating Arbor Day next week with tree giveaways, games and more.

From 1-4 p.m. on May 13, Petoskey residents can head to the Winter Sports Park to celebrate Arbor Day. The holiday is nationally celebrated to encourage the planting of more trees. The national celebration is usually the last Friday of April. This year it fell on April 28.

Petoskey has earned “Tree City” status from the Arbor Day Foundation. According to the group’s website, Petoskey has earned the title four times.

The public event on May 13 will have arts and crafts, a scavenger hunt and informational presentations. There will also be a tree climbing demonstration and tree transplant giveaways.

Arborist Doug Boor will be at the event, leading presentations about how to care for trees, choosing the right trees and identifying diseases. He will also be available to answer any questions.

Eric Hemenway from the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians will also be leading a group walk to discuss native plants and their relationship to the Odawa.

No registration is required to attend.
