Petoskey volleyball wins Algonac tourney, Northmen tennis has success downstate

ALGONAC — Over the last couple weeks, the Petoskey volleyball team has been in some big battles against some tough Big North Conference teams.

Saturday came as a break from that for the Northmen and they put it to good use in an Algonac hosted tournament, which they won.

Petoskey earned an overall title with a 4-1 finish on the day, falling only to host Algonac.

Wins for the Northmen came over Marine City (16-25, 25-22, 15-11), Warren Woods Tower (25-12, 15-25, 15-9), Port Huron Northern (25-17, 25-22) and Yale (25-22, 25-18).

Against Algonac, Petoskey opened with a 25-17 win, then dropped the next two, 8-25 and 9-15.

Katie Parker led the way for the Northmen on the day with 82 assists, while adding nine aces on 50 serves, serving at 100 percent on all 50 attempts.

Lucy Tarachas added 64 digs, Caitlyn Matelski had 26 kills and Katie Hansen and Brynn Jonker each had 16 kills. Sadie Corey also had 15 kills.

Petoskey will next head to Traverse City Central for a Big North rematch with the Trojans on Wednesday, Sept. 28.

The next home match for Petoskey will come on Wednesday, Oct. 5 when they welcome in Gaylord.

NORTHERN LAKES

Harbor Light 3, Wolverine 1

HARBOR SPRINGS — Playing with a full squad for the first time this season, the Harbor Light Christian volleyball team earned a four-set win over Wolverine in NLC action Monday.

The Swordsmen earned wins of 25-23, 27-25 and 25-21, while dropping a set two 25-21 game.

“We finally got Ava Kenwabikise in the game after sitting last season and then recovering from knee surgery at the beginning of this season,” Harbor Light coach Donna Powers said. “We also were able to work out a whole new rotation! Tonight was just another example of how these girls pull together and rise to the challenge.

“I love watching these girls pull together and talk to each other through every play. We are now a whole team and we are only going to get stronger from here.”

Kenwabikise finished with 16 kills to lead on the night, Molly Ogden had 10 aces and 17 digs, Laney Jakeway had 20 digs, 13 assists and four aces and Jade Evoy added four aces.

LAKE MICHIGAN

Boyne City 4, Kalkaska 0

BOYNE FALLS — Boyne City’s win streak grew to four games on the pitch Monday, when they welcomed in Kalkaska and earned 4-0 victory.

It also came as the eighth shutout for the Ramblers on the season and third in the last four games.

Goals for the Ramblers Monday came scored by Reese Bey, Amayo Bardeguez-Barrera and a pair from Logan Lloyd.

Lloyd also had an assist, as did Kaleb Lloyd and Bardeguez-Barrera.

Kacey Gray earned the shutout win in goal, making two saves.

Boyne City, 7-4-4 overall and 3-2-1 in the LMC, will next meet Grayling Tuesday, then heads to Charlevoix on Thursday, Sept. 29.

TENNIS

Petoskey at Allegan, Holland

ALLEGAN — The Petoskey boys’ tennis team got in a busy weekend on courts across downstate Michigan.

The Northmen met up with Allegan and St. Clair in Allegan, then headed over to Holland to take on Ludington in another dual match.

“Our singles competed well against some really tough competition,” Petoskey coach Denny Green said. “Our doubles showed how much they have improved by winning 10 out of 12 matches.”

Petoskey earned a 6-2 win over Allegan, with doubles sweeping, then took a 5-3 loss against St. Clair. The weekend then closed with another 6-2 win for Petoskey over Ludington.

Petoskey’s Luke Washington was recently lost for the season to a foot injury, causing some reshuffling around the lineup.

Petoskey will next head to the Big North Conference championships matches on Wednesday, Sept. 28. It will be hosted by Traverse City West, though played at TC Central due to court construction.
