Petoskey wrestlers win Fenton Tourney, Charlevoix earns title in Mio

FENTON — If there’s one thing the Petoskey wrestling team has looked forward to this season, it’s weekend tournament action.

The Northmen have been nearly flawless on the mat during tournaments this season – both home and on the road – and over this past weekend, added another trophy to their haul.

Petoskey earned a 5-0 day as a team and had three wrestlers earn 5-0 days as individuals, along with one other who went 4-0.

Petoskey dominated against the likes of Farmington and Walled Lake Western, picking up wins of 68-9 and 66-18, respectively, then had to battle through a few other matchups.

The Northmen earned a 39-32 win over host Fenton, relying on key wins between 126 pounds and 157 pounds, which included three pin victories in there.

Petoskey also then battled through a victory over Swartz Creek in a 45-30 final, as 150 pounds to 190 pounds led the way for the Northmen in a 5-0 sweep between the weight classes.

Petoskey then came up against South Lyon and earned a 42-35 win, picking up the victory on a self-pin by South Lyon. South Lyon held an honorable mention Division 1 ranking in the latest poll from the Michigan Wrestling Association and Michigan Grappler.

It came as Petoskey’s third tournament title of the season, with previous wins in the Frankenmuth Tournament and their hosted Carl VanderWall Memorial Tourney. For the season, Petoskey is now 25-3 overall in dual matches, including tournament action.

Individually Saturday, Petoskey had both Brendan Swiss of 150 pounds and Trevor Swiss go undefeated at 5-0. Trevor also earned all of his victories by pin, while Brendan picked up four pin wins. Ryan Cook was also a 5-0 finisher at 126 pounds, winning three of his matches by pin.

Kenny Roberts (190) also went 4-0, winning two by pin, JD Cantrell (285) and Tyler Dohm (157) were both 4-1 and Maksym Malkowski (106), Jaden VanderWall (144) and Connor Grebe (175) all finished 3-2.

Bobby Patrick (132), Zahar Rush (138) and Adam Goodwin (215) also each earned two wins to finish 2-3.

Petoskey will next head to Gaylord on Saturday, Jan. 28 for the Northern Michigan Championships, then host once again in a tri-meet on Wednesday, Feb. 1 in the Petoskey High School gym.

Charlevoix at Mio 

MIO —The Charlevoix wrestling team traveled to the Mio Thunderbolt Invitational over the weekend and earned an overall victory with the highest score.

A total of 17 teams took place in Mio, with the Rayders recording a score of 187.5, following by Meridian at 157. Mio Ausable was then third with 138, Cass City placed fourth with 133 and Roscommon was fifth, 130.5.

Along with the team win, four Charlevoix wrestling were individual champions in their weight class.

Ellery Smith earned a title at 150 pounds, going 3-0 for the day, Brady Jess had a 3-0 day at 175 pounds, Landon Swanson won the 190-pound class at 3-0 and Trevor Streeter finished 3-0 at 215 pounds.

For the season, Smith is now 21-4 overall, Jess holds a 30-1 record, Swanson is 28-2 and Streeter is now 28-2.

Also for the Rayders, Jamie Parrish (150) placed second at 2-1, Mason Cunningham (157) earned a second place finish at 1-1 and Adam Streeter (285) was 2-1, giving him a second place finish.

Connor Ortiz (285), Max Reynolds (113), Logan Wilks (144) and Sawyer Blasczyzk (215) also all placed fourth.

Charlevoix will next head to the Northern Michigan Championships in Gaylord on Saturday, Jan. 28.
