Petoskey's Evan Rindfusz earns tennis win No. 100, Rayder soccer edges Blazers

PETOSKEY — Petoskey senior Evan Rindfusz knows how to throw himself a going away party.

With the Northmen boys’ tennis team welcoming in Cadillac for senior night at the Petoskey courts, Rindfusz capped his career at home with his 100th career victory.

Most of his career has been spent at No. 1 singles, with Rindfusz again putting together a standout campaign atop the lineup this season.

Rindfusz earned a victory over Cadillac’s Davin Brown Thursday in 6-4, 6-1 fashion, which delivered the 100th victory.

Petoskey earned a 7-1 victory over Cadillac on the night, with the singles flight earning a sweep.

At No. 2 singles, Luke Washington defeated Henry Schmittdiel of Cadillac, 6-2, 6-4, then Elijah Rindfusz of No. 3 singles earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Brady Koenig.

Collin Brantly of Petoskey’s No. 4 singles then capped the lineup with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Matt Erickson.

Within doubles, Petoskey’s Nate Thomas and Brian Tang earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Oscar Kendall and Chris Anderson at No. 1 doubles and Max Faulkner and Caleb Knickerbocker defeated Cadillac’s Keaston Johnson Tommy Reagan in a 6-1, 6-0 match at No. 2 doubles.

The No. 3 team of Ethan St. Clair and Luke Bailey for Petoskey then earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Drew Drabik and Woodlen Paca of Cadillac.

The lone loss for Petoskey came at No. 4 doubles, with William Rogier and Martin Howard falling in a 6-2, 7-6(3) match against Max McCumber and Ben Anderson of Cadillac.

Along with Evan Rindfusz as a senior, other seniors recognized Thursday included Ethan St. Clair and Nate Thomas.

Petoskey picked up a victory over Traverse City Central earlier in the week, making for a 4-0 BNC dual slate this season.

The Northmen get a week off and will next head to an Allegan Invite next Saturday, Sept. 24.

SOCCER

LAKE MICHIGAN

Charlevoix 3, Kalkaska 2

KALKASKA — The Charlevoix boys’ soccer team earned a 3-2 Lake Michigan Conference victory over host Kalkaska Thursday, snapping a five-game streak of ties or losses.

The Rayders leaned on Seb Suchowolec in the victory, with Suchowolec notching all three goals to grab the hat trick.

The win moved the Rayders to 4-2-3 overall and 2-1-2 within the LMC, tied for second in the league.

Charlevoix will next head to Harbor Springs on Monday, Sept. 19 for a match with the rival Rams.

Elk Rapids 2, Boyne City 0

ELK RAPIDS — The Boyne City boys’ soccer team hung close with league leader Elk Rapids Thursday though eventually succumbed to a 2-0 defeat.

The Elks scored with nine minutes left in the first half, then added a second goal early in the second half.

Boyne placed three shots on target, while Ramblers keeper Kacey Gray made eight saves in net.

Boyne City, now 3-4-4 overall and 2-1-2 within the LMC, will next meet Cheboygan at home at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 17.

Boyne’s JV also took a 5-0 loss from the Elks, though Gabe Zarzycki made nine saves in net and Odin Kirkby notched 11 saves.

VOLLEYBALL

Boyne City 3, Sault Ste. Marie 1

BOYNE CITY — The Boyne City volleyball team kept the wins coming within the Rambler gym Thursday, topping Sault Ste. Marie in four sets.

Boyne earned consecutive wins of 25-16 in the opening two sets, fell in a close third set in a 26-24 game, then capped off the match with a dominant 25-13 victory in the fourth.

“I am proud of the way the girls played tonight,” Boyne coach Mallory Slate said. “I hope they can remember going on the rest of the season that if you never give up on a play who knows what will happen. We know we are a great offensive team but to run that offensive we need to be better defensively, and they did just that tonight.”

Morgan Deming led with 20 kills, 10 digs, eight blocks and four aces, Ava Tarsi had 28 assists, 10 digs, five aces and two kills and Elly Wilcox had seven kills and two blocks.

Braylyn Rincon also added 17 digs and 13 serve receptions, while Brook Williams and Maggi McHugh stood out as well for Slate.

Boyne next welcomes Charlevoix on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

CROSS COUNTRY

Mackinaw City NLC Invite

MACKINAW CITY — The Mackinaw City cross country team recently hosted a Northern Lakes Conference meet, winning on both the boys and girls sides.

The boys team tied with Ellsworth with 11 points, though earned the win on tiebreaker, while the girls placed first with 12 points, edging out Wolverine by one.

“Our Mackinaw course is always a favorite, because it’s fast,” Mackinaw coach Heather Huffman said. “I had four kids reach their season records, while five kids already reached their personal records. The conference standings are very close. It’s anyone’s title right now.”

Larissa Huffman placed first on the girls side in 22 minutes, 51 seconds, while Madison Smith was third (25:24) and Cynthia Thompson eighth (36:57).

On the boys side, Cooper Whipkey placed second in 19:20, Noah Valot was fourth (19:47); Trystan Swanson, fifth (21:13); Myran Thompson, sixth (22:25); and Ben Strittmatter, eighth (22:54).
