PFF: Jets secondary is an ‘ascending unit’
The New York Jets have made too many changes to their secondary this offseason to really rank them anywhere. But at least Pro Football Focus sees something brewing.
PFF continued their positional-group rankings and upon getting to the secondary, the Jets landed as a middle-of-the-pack team: No. 17 overall.
However, it’s their tier that’s the positive note. At 17, the Jets land as a “Tier 3” secondary which is described as an “ascending unit.”
After all the transactions made in New York this offseason relating to the secondary, that’s a good feeling.
The Jets’ work this spring is highlighted by top-overall pick at the 2022 NFL draft, Sauce Gardner. Expectations are through the roof for him, but potentially helping him out is DJ Reed.
After a strong first year as a starter with the Seattle Seahawks, Reed joined the Jets via free agency. Gang Green has some proving to do, but even the fancy stats folks at PFF acknowledge that “on paper,” it looks good.

On paper, general manager Joe Douglas has done an excellent job of rebuilding what was a bottom-tier unit as recently as heading into last season. Now with three new starters penciled in, the Jets figure to be jumping up a few rungs. The most underrated addition here is definitely D.J. Reed Jr., who put together a breakout 2021 season. He allowed only 383 yards in his first full year as a starter for the Seahawks.
