The Pflugerville Public Library is wrapping up this holiday season with its fifth annual Winter Pfest. This indoor festival is for families with children up to age 10. Winter Pfest is on Saturday, Jan. 13, from 2-4 p.m. This event provides an opportunity for family members to warm up with a cup of hot cocoa and a cookie sponsored by the Friends of the Pflugerville Library.

Children and their adults will play different indoor games, complete winter-related craft projects and get balloon animals made by our special guest, Ms. Poppy. They can also get a snowflake temporary tattoo.

Families will play traditional games such as pin the nose to the snowman and snowflake tic-tac-toe. They will be challenged to fish with a candy cane, feed a snowman with small balls and have a snowball fight with pompom and paper snowballs. Older kids will work the squares in the popular 9 Square in the Air game. Everybody can participate in our original WinGo game!

The kids’ room will become a crafting space for children. They will be able to make and take home different projects such as a snow owl magnet, a snowflake ornament or a windsock. They will also be able to paint a snowflake with acrylic paints and make a couple of shapes with fuse beads.

Library staff coordinate this event with the help of our fabulous volunteers, the Friends of the Pflugerville Library, and the Library Board.

While you visit the library for this kid-friendly special event, please make sure you take a few minutes to check out our collection of winter books for kids. In the Early Reader shelves, we keep both fiction and nonfiction books where emergent readers can have fun and learn while they read about winter animals, winter plants, winter adventures, winter storms in ""The Power of Snow" by Bob Raczka, "Blizzards" by Betsy Rathbum, "Winter is Fun!" by Walt Moon, and many other titles. The juvenile fiction and nonfiction collections have many titles about winter for your elementary school-age kids.

Plan for indoor fun during bad winter weather and take home a Read-to-Me Bundle or one of our Maker Kits to keep little ones busy. Our Read-to-Me bundles include three books and an activity sheet with ideas for you to do with your children before, during and after reading.  Topics vary from farm animals to emotions to airplanes to potty training and more. The library’s maker kits incorporate STEM activities such as Building Straws, a microscope for toddlers, and Brain Flakes, along with early learning kits for preschool-age children with numbers, letters, colors, etc.

While we enjoy having all our guests come for special events, we would like to remind you that our monthly calendar is full of several kid-friendly events for the whole family.  Regular programs include:

  • Baby Times and Storytimes filled with books, music and fun happen multiple times during the week.

  • Kids Club, our after-school program for kids 5 to 8, offers engaging crafting and reading on Tuesday afternoons.

  • Tween Time with book clubs, kawaii art, tech challenges and more for kids 8 to 12 is every Wednesday.

  • Family Night is a fun-filled evening for families with children ages 5 to 12 scheduling crafts, special guests and more.

  • Homeschool Groups for kids 5 to 18 provide opportunities to socialize, play games, and learn new skills and meet every Thursday.

This fall we introduced two new children’s programs.  Kids Move & Groove is an interactive come-and-go program to provide the opportunity for little ones to socialize and have fun. Parents and children enjoy dancing, singing, clapping, making music and rhyming together. Y is for Yoga - Kids Yoga for ages 5 to 8 builds minds and bodies through yoga with movement games, songs and an occasional book.

All abilities are welcome at the library. If you or your child need special accommodations to participate in any of our programs, please let us know in advance.

We all look forward to having an unforgettable Winter Pfest and invite you to visit library.pflugervilletx.gov to learn about library programs and events and to connect with us.
