Pflugerville residents last month contributed hundreds of painted rocks to the city's rock garden.

During two community events in October, Deutschen Fest and the Animal Center's Trunk or Treat for children, residents painted over 800 rocks that will become part of the Art Rocks Garden for the city's downtown plaza at 100 E. Main St.

"Public art is essential as it provides for a platform for community expression and bolsters the community's vibrant character and identity," said Erin Sellers, the city's innovation strategist.

The rocks are part of the city's Art in Public Places program, which started in March. Seller said the goal of the rock garden is to provide community access to create public art and revitalize art in the downtown area. She said the city will hold more opportunities through next year for residents to contribute.

"The community rock garden creates multiple opportunities for community engagement," Seller said. "It is a fun, easy activity for people of all ages to come together and enjoy, while simultaneously beautifying our public spaces."
