PGA cancels Merchandise Show slated for the Orange County Convention Center

The PGA Merchandise Show is moving to an “all-virtual” format, canceling one of the largest conventions scheduled for the Orange County Convention Center, because of concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.

The Orlando trade show, slated for January, is “the world’s largest annual gathering of the golf industry,” according to a release from PGA Golf Exhibitions.

The show typically features more than 1,000 companies and brands showcasing new golf technologies and products. It traditionally brings in more than 40,000 industry professionals for product launch events, networking and education.

In years past, the event has constituted nearly 10 miles of exhibit aisles.

PGA Golf Exhibitions noted in the release that they plan to return to Orlando for a live event in 2022.

As of Oct. 14, the Orange County Convention Center has reportedly lost 59 conventions and rescheduled another 36 since the start of the pandemic. According to the center’s website, these losses have resulted in more than $1.7 billion of economic impact to the region.

The IAAPA Expo for the attractions industry canceled in September, along with the military-focused simulation convention I/ITSEC. Both conventions were expected to bring in more than 17,000 visitors each.

The PGA Merchandise virtual convention will take place Jan. 26-29. Industry experts provided statements of support for the decision to move the convention online.
