NEW PHILADELPHIA -- You just know it has to be your night on the basketball court when you throw up a near three-quarter court heave at the halftime buzzer and it hits nothing but net.

That’s exactly what happened for New Philadelphia junior Carter Vandall on Friday night against visiting Tusky Valley.

Vandall went on to have a career high 27 points and added 11 rebounds for another double-double this season as the Quakers dominated the glass and the second half overall in taking care of the Trojans 66-40.

“Vandall was excellent tonight – he’s a good player and he’s consistent, but I thought tonight was the best he has played all season,” said Tusky Valley head coach Terry Sites. “He was very impressive and (the Quakers) played well together, too.”

New Philadelphia head coach Matt Voll also praised the effective play of the 6-foot-5 Vandall.

“It was nice to see him hitting his stride out there,” Voll said. “It was obviously Carter’s night tonight and he just did a great job.”

New Phila (9-2) rode the momentum of Vandall’s 50-foot buzzer-beater that created quite a buzz among the large crowd and gave the Quakers a 34-24 lead. The Quakers burst from the locker room and quickly ran off the first 11 points of the third quarter to put the game out of reach at 45-24.

New Philadelphia dominated around the basket all game, outrebounding the Trojans (9-4) 40-16, with 17 offensive rebounds. Quaker senior Jadan Lowery had nine points and matched Vandall with a game-high 11 rebounds, and junior Michael Vickers had 12 points and nine rebounds.

“We did a really good job of getting the ball to the basket,” Voll said. “And those shots that didn’t fall, we had guys there for offensive rebounds and good looks on second shots.”

The Quakers also were hot from long range, as five different players combined to make nine 3-pointers – Kayden Schoelles, Vandall, Vickers and junior Brandt Wells made two 3-pointers each, and junior Colton Slaughter added one. Overall, New Philadelphia connected on 24 of 53 shots.

The Trojans fell behind early and found themselves trailing 21-7 after the first quarter. But Tusky Valley came right back in the second quarter, fashioning a gritty 11-0 run to get it to within three points at 25-22, and even missed a 3-pointer that would have tied the game.

It looked like it was setting up to be quite a battle before Lowery rebounded a Tusky Valley miss and tossed the ball to Vandall, who turned and fired in the long bomb that turned a seven-point New Phila lead into the 10-point margin at the break.

“That 3-pointer was just so big for them right then,” Sites said. “It really gave them a big shot of confidence, too, and they came out and took it over in the third quarter. We always talk about how important the first few minutes of the third quarter are, and they grabbed that from us tonight.”

The Trojans had a tough shooting night, making 16 of 41 (six of 20 in 3-pointers) and only shifty senior guard Logan Stotzer hit for double figures with 10 points.

Voll praised the Quakers’ ball movement and offensive execution.

“The ball movement, player movement and spacing are the three most important things to have to be efficient on offense,” he said. “We did a good job of that for the most part tonight, and we got some good looks at shots out of it.”

Due to illness issues, the scheduled freshman and junior varsity games between the schools were not played as originally scheduled.
