New Philadelphia house fire starts in kitchen, kills pet birds

NEW PHILADELPHIA ‒ Several birds died in a house fire at 1015 Logan St. NW late Sunday night, according to fire Capt. Robert Snyder.

He said the fire started near the stove, leaving the kitchen gutted.

The rest of the house sustained heat and smoke damage. Snyder estimated the value of the damage to be at least $50,000. The home is insured.

Residents left the house without assistance and were not injured, according to Snyder.

Snyder said New Philadelphia firefighters were called at 11:28 p.m., arrived at 11:34 p.m., had water on the fire at 11:40 p.m. and had it controlled a minute later.

The cause of the fire is accidental, although an electrical issue cannot be ruled out, he said.

Snyder said a Smith Ambulance crew did "a wonderful job" giving oxygen to the residents' pet birds, although none survived.

Firefighters from Uhrichsville and Dover assisted at the scene.
