Philadelphia Union honors those killed by police during 1-0 win over NYCFC
ORLANDO, Fla. — The Philadelphia Union earned a 1-0 win over New York City FC during a match Thursday that featured a tribute to those killed while getting detained by police.
The Union have joined Orlando City at the top of the Group-A standings, with both teams clinching three points apiece in their opening matches of the tournament.
Before kickoff, players from both sides took a moment to kneel in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Philadelphia Union players unveiled their jerseys, which bore the names of Black men and women killed in police custody.
It was part of an effort led by Black Players for Change, a coalition of Black players throughout the league determined to use the MLS is Back tournament to address racism and police brutality.
As players readjusted to the pitch after months away from the game, play started out a little scrappy and sloppy. Although New York City dominated possession, Philadelphia found success by dropping their attacking line and taking advantage of quick openings in transition.
Captain Alejandro Bedoya netted a goal in the 63rd minute, collecting a rebounding shot in the box and rifling it past the keeper.
The Union’s lead was maintained by keeper Andre Blake, who remained stalwart despite a flurry of New York City attack in the final half-hour of play. Blake finished the match with six saves, holding off several point-blank shots to notch the first shutout of the tournament.
