Forward Maximilian Philipp is permanently joining Freiburg from Bundesliga rivals Wolfsburg after an initial loan deal, according to dpa sources.

Kicker sports magazine also reported that a full transfer clause in the initial season-long loan deal from summer was triggered because Philipp has played a certain amount of matches for Freiburg.

There was immediate confirmation from the clubs.

Philipp, 29, has played 13 games for Freiburg in the Bundesliga and Europa League this term, scoring two goals. He missed 12 games with a shoulder injury.

Philipp started his top flight career in Freiburg 2014-2017 before moving on to Borussia Dortmund. He then played for Dynamo Moscow before joining Wolfsburg in 2020, and was on loan at Werder Bremen for the second part of last season.
