Phillies RHP Eflin scratched from Saturday's start (back)

The Philadelphia Phillies placed right-hander Zach Eflin on the 10-day injured list on Friday because of back tightness that will force him to miss his scheduled start on Saturday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

The move is retroactive to Tuesday, and the Phillies recalled left-hander Cole Irwin from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding transaction.

Phillies manager Gabe Kapler told reporters before Friday's game in Los Angeles that the 25-year-old Eflin began experiencing a stiff back and spasms earlier in the week.

Kapler and the team have yet to name a replacement to start Saturday against the Dodgers.

Eflin is in his fourth big league season and has been having a career year thus far with a 5-5 record and 3.02 ERA in 11 starts, which includes a pair of complete games and one shutout. He is coming off a career-high 11 wins and 128 innings pitched in 2018.

Eflin was originally a first-round pick by the San Diego Padres in 2012. He was traded to the Dodgers as part of a five-player deal in December 2014 that involved catcher Yasmani Grandal going to Los Angeles and Matt Kemp to San Diego. One day later, the Phillies sent then-veteran shortstop Jimmy Rollins to the Dodgers for Eflin and minor league pitcher Tom Windle.
