The Indianapolis Colts made an intriguing addition to the backfield following the 2022 NFL draft, signing veteran and former Pro Bowl running back Phillip Lindsay to a one-year deal.

While the backfield belongs to reigning rushing champ Jonathan Taylor, and Nyheim Hines will have a strong presence as well, Lindsay provides some intrigue as the third back in the rotation.

His thought process on joining the Colts was pretty simple when they called, and it all starts with the big men up front.

“You gotta love it. Like, who wouldn’t wanna run with these boys? My whole thing was, I was always thinking, ‘Man, if I ever got the opportunity to run with these boys, I could do some special stuff,’” Lindsay told reporters at OTAs.

Lindsay will be competing with a handful of capable backs for the No. 3 spot in the backfield behind Taylor and Hines. The Colts recently signed former Baltimore Ravens running back Ty’Son Williams while a pair of undrafted rookies, D’Vonte Price and C.J. Verdell, remain in the mix. Deon Jackson, who held the role for the majority of the second half in 2021, also is in the competition again.

The No. 3 running back spot may come down to whichever player is best on special teams. It’s the reason Jackson was dressed for gameday while Marlon Mack was a healthy scratch for most of the second half.

Lindsay certainly has the pedigree as an early-down back if something were to happen to Taylor. He eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards in each of his first two seasons in the NFL despite fighting for his job as an undrafted rookie in 2018.

The competition in the backfield should be a lively one as nearly every player has a strong case for the role.

It will be interesting to see who wins out but watching Lindsay run behind the Colts’ offensive line should be fun to watch during training camp and the preseason.
