Phillips third, New London girls take fourth at Class 1A state golf tournament

New London High School sophomore Taylor Phillips tied for third place individually and she led the Tigers to fourth place in the team standings of the Class 1A state girls golf tournament at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown Friday.

Phillips carded an 84 Friday for a 36-hole total of 166, tying her for third place with Grundy Center's Abbie Lindeman. Lynnville-Sully's Greenlee Smock was medalist with a 75-79—154 and Sigourney's Madelynn Hornback was runner-up at 81-82—163.

Bishop Garrigan won the team championship with a 713 and was followed by Grundy Center (739), Central Lyon (757), New London (768), Newell-Fonda (769), Akron Westfield (790), Sigourney (796), West Branch (809), BCLUW (821) and St. Albert (835).

New London's Sophie Malott tired for 22nd at 92-98—190 and Emma Nye tied for 39th with a 100-104—204. Saige Barron rounded out the Tigers' team score with a 104-104—208. Also playing for New London were Emma Busby (118-123—241) and Stevey Wintermeyer (131-130—261).

MEPO'S HINES TAKES 3RD: Mediapolis sophomore Olivia Hines finished in third place individually in the Class 2A state girls golf tournament at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.

Hines was Thursday's first-round leader with a 72, then needed 81 strokes Friday to finish at 153. Sumner-Fredericksburg's Chloe Bolte and Molly Fereday of Waterloo Columbus tied for first place with 149s, but Bolte won a playoff for medalist honors.

Sumner-Fredericksburg won the team championship with 703 strokes, nine-better than runner-up New Hampton. Dike-New Hartford was third at 730 and was followed by Williamsburg (737), Roland-Story (747), Van Meter (757), Treynor (762), Garner-Hayfield-Ventua (782), Anamosa (792) and Mid-Prairie (795).

BHS's BRIGGS 13TH: Burlington High School sophomore Lauren Briggs carded a 79 in the final round of the Class 4A state girls golf tournament at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny and finished with a two-day total of 160, good for a tie for 13th place.

She tied with West Des Moines Valley's Kayla Moline, who also carded 81-79—160.

Bettendorf's Shannon Vogler was medalist after a playoff against Marshalltown's Amber Henson. Both finished with 143 strokes.

Valley won the team championship with 637 strokes, 19 better than runner-up Pleasant Valley. Marshalltown was third with 665 and was followed by Cedar Falls (686), Western Dubuque (691), Southeast Polk (693), Bettendorf (700), Waukee Northwest (705), Linn-Mar (705) and Ankeny Centennial (721.

Waukee Northwest won a tie-breaker over Linn-Mar for eighth place.

AMES 5TH, WIBBEN 14TH: Keokuk's Natalie Ames finished in a tie for fifth and Mount Pleasant's Sami Wibben tied for 14th in the Class 3A state girls golf tournament at River Valley Golf Course in Adel.

Ames finished with a two-day total of 80-87—167, tying her with Winterset's Jaya West and Clear Lake's Rebecca DeLong for fifth place.

Wibben carded 88-87—175, tying her with Nevada's Olivia Axmear for 14th place.

Rylee Heryford of Newton was medalist with a 75-74—149. She tied with Gilbert's Eden Lohrback, then beat Lohrbach on the third playoff hole.

Clear Lake won the team championship with a 713, three swings better than runner-up Gilbert. Dubuque Wahlert was third with 750 and was followed by Lisbon (785), West Delaware (799), Washington (805), Humboldt (828), Solon (832), Sioux Center (835) and ADM (881).

PREP BASEBALL

BURLINGTON 2-8, NORTH SCOTT 1-13: The Grayhounds split a non-conference doubleheader at Eldridge.

In the first game, winning pitcher Jacob Zahner limited the Lancers to one unearned run on four hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out five. Brock Dengler pitched the last inning and earned the save. Dengler also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Mateo Rascon hit a solo homer.

Burlington was limited to four hits in the second game but managed to score eight runs, all earned. The Grayhounds coaxed six walks out of three North Scott pitchers. Zahner and Dengler both doubled.

Burlington (1-3) opens Southeast Conference play Tuesday with a doubleheader at Washington.

CARDINAL 8, NOTRE DAME 0: The Comets blanked Notre Dame in a South Division game at Eldon.

Notre Dame (1-1) hosts Central Lee Tuesday.

NEW LONDON 10, CENTRAL LEE 0: A seven-run fifth inning gave the Tigers a walk-off win via the mercy rule at New London.

Carter Allen and Drew Benz each had two hits for New London. Allen and Kooper Schulte doubled and Dereck Santiago tripled. Santiago was the winning pitcher, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out seven in five innings.

Alex Sandoval's single spoiled Santiago's no-hit bid.

HIGHLAND 11, L-M 3: The Huskies coasted past Louisa-Muscatine in a North Division game at Riverside.

Chris Day, Bryar Runnells and Allen Stauffer had two hits each for L-M. Runnells and Stauffer doubled and Dalton Cromer and Ty Northup each tripled.

PREP SOFTBALL

WB-ND 15, WAPELLO 0: Reagan Engberg and Lauren Summers banged out three hits each to lead West Burlington-Notre Dame past the Arrows at Wapello.

Summers had three doubles and five RBIs and was the winning pitcher. She limited Wapello to two hits — singles by Ada Boysen and Serah Shafer. Summers walked none and struck out 10 in five innings.

Lauren Krieger added two singles and four RBIs in three trips to the plate for the Falcons.

COLUMBUS 7, MEDIAPOLIS 3: Lily Coil fired a two-hitter to lead the Wildcats past Mediapolis in a North Division game at Columbus Junction.

Coil gave up three runs, but none were earned. She walked three and fanned 11 Bullettes in seven innings. Coil also led Columbus at the plate with two singles in three trips. Ariana Vergara had two RBIs and Kennedy Woepking and Frannie Sosa each had one.

Columbus improved to 3-1; Mediapolis is 1-2.

CENTRAL LEE 10, NEW LONDON 0: Shanna Buford homered, doubled and drove five runs home to lead the Lady Hawks to a South Division win at New London..

Kenna Sandoval, Carlee Pezley and Marie Young each had two hits for Central Lee. Young doubled. Winning pitcher Meghan Hopp gave up seven hits and two walks while fanning three in six innings.

Ashlyn McSorley went 2-for-3 to lead New London at bat. Eighth-grader Marliana Woodsmall was the losing pitcher.

HOLY TRINITY 10, DANVILLE 3: Halle Cain and Mary Hellige each had two hits to lead the Crusaders past Danville at West Point.

Hellige had four RBIs and Cain doubled. Hellige was also the winning pitcher. She gave up one earned run on three hits and a walk in seven innings. She struck out 10.

Carlea Beckman, Kylie Palmer and Ava Smith each singled for Danville.
