Phoebe Waller-Bridge has hinted that her new Tomb Raider series will see Lara Croft return with a 90s vibe.

Earlier in the year it was announced that Prime Video intends to adapt the beloved videogame franchise into a shared universe with Waller-Bridge as the titular character, following in the footsteps of Alicia Vikander and Angelina Jolie who have both portrayed the role in live-action.

This will be the multi-hyphenate's second outing as an archeologist after she played the goddaughter of Indiana Jones in the most recent movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Waller-Bridge implied that her back catalogue will stand her in good stead when it comes to bringing this iconic character to life.

"The opportunity to have a female action character... Having worked on [No Time to Die] and having worked as an actor on [Indiana Jones], I feel like I've been building up to this," Waller-Bridge said.

"What if I could take the reins on an action franchise, with everything I've learned, with a character I adore, and also just bring back some of that '90s vibe? It's such a wonderful feeling to think you know what to do."

As it happens, Waller-Bridge - famed for Fleabag amongst other gems - hopes to channel the legendary Greek king Odysseus for this new venture.

"I feel like when you're working in the industry, you've got to ride the waves and lean in," she noted.

"There's room to do something really quite dangerous, and if I can do something dangerous and exciting with Tomb Raider, I already have an audience of people who love Lara and hopefully will continue to.

She added: "And that is a very unusual position to be in. It's the old Trojan Horse."

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is out now in UK cinemas, while US fans can catch it on the big screen from Friday (June 30).
