Phoenix likely to hit 70 degrees on winter solstice; northern Arizona to see white Christmas

In a week of holiday celebrations and the arrival of winter solstice, Arizonans should expect cool weather and rain.

The winter solstice will arrive Tuesday, which means that the sun will be at its lowest elevation in the sky and daylight hours will be the shortest all year. Despite that, Phoenix is likely to hit 71 degrees, and Tucson may see 75 degrees.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix says the Valley will see slightly above normal temperatures throughout the week with possible chances for rain by Thursday and Friday.

"Rain chances peak at 60% on Christmas Eve. Then slight rain chances for Christmas Day Saturday," said NWS Phoenix in a tweet Sunday.

Temperature highs will remain in the mid-60s to low 70s throughout the week in Phoenix and temperature lows will be in the mid-40s to low 50s.

"The past several days of clear skies will rapidly change later today as moisture streaming eastward off the eastern Pacific south of a deep level low makes its way into our region," according to the weather service. "We will see a fairly steady feed of upper level moisture and clouds into our region through the middle part of the week."

Meanwhile, northern Arizona is likely to see a white Christmas.

According to the weather service in Flagstaff, weather patterns are showing cold, windy and unsettled conditions for the weekend. Rain and snow showers are likely to appear from Thursday into Friday and Saturday into Sunday.

"A developing storm system off the West Coast of the United States is set to swing over the Western states starting Thursday, lingering over the region well into the week," the weather service said.

Arizona Snowbowl says the mountain has seen 6 inches of snow during the past seven days and 22 inches for the season.

"Keep your eyes on the forecast as we are expecting snow this coming weekend," says Arizona Snowbowl's website. "As temperatures remain cold and snow making continues, keep an eye on our website for daily terrain updates."
