Tech men No. 2 seed in New Haven

The eighth-ranked Texas Tech men's golf team will be the No. 2 seed in the New Haven Regional of the NCAA tournament in mid-May.

The event at the Yale Golf Club in New Haven, Connecticut, is one of six 54-hole regionals scheduled May 16-18 around the country. The entire field was announced Wednesday. The Red Raiders are in their 20th consecutive NCAA tournament.

No. 5 North Carolina is the top seed in New Haven. Behind Tech, the other teams, in order of seed are No. 17 Wake Forest, No. 19 Illinois, No. 28 North Carolina State, Charlotte, North Florida, Georgia Southern, Mississippi State, Virginia, Central Florida, Seton Hall, Yale and Sacred Heart.

Three regionals will have 13 teams and 10 individuals not on those teams, and the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams.

From each regional, the top five teams and the low-scoring individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA championship final tournament May 27 through June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Last year, Tech won the Albuquerque Regional and tied for 11th at the NCAA championship, also at Grayhawk.

Tech is led by Ludvig Aberg, who is No. 2 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. On Wednesday, Aberg was named the Big 12 men's golfer of the month for April. The junior from Sweden finished second at the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, finished sixth at the Thunderbird Collegiate in Phoenix and won the conference tournament at Whispering Pines in Trinity.

That gave him seven top-10 finishes this season.

Women's basketball

Former Texas Tech basketball player Vivian Gray was among four players waived by the Phoenix Mercury, the defending WNBA champion team announced Wednesday.

The Mercury signed Gray three weeks ago as a rookie free agent after she wasn't selected in the WNBA draft. The regular season starts Friday.

Gray, a 6-foot-1 forward, averaged 20.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game this past season for Tech.

She played one season of college basketball at NCAA Division II Fort Lewis and two seasons apiece at Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. She earned first-team all-conference recognition in all five years and honorable mention all-America status four times from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
