Phoenix police are investigating a car crash involving a police vehicle that left an officer with serious injuries early Wednesday morning.

According to Phoenix police, just after 12:30 a.m., officers responded to a call of a serious vehicle accident involving a police car near 40th and Oak streets. The police officer involved was trapped inside their patrol car after a driver ran a red light and hit the patrol car, police said.

The Phoenix Fire Department responded to the scene and extracted the trapped officer from the vehicle. The officer was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries where he remained as of Wednesday afternoon.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash fled the scene on foot along with the two other passengers, police said. The three men were located and detained soon after.

The driver had injuries from the accident and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said. Impairment is not believed to be a contributing factor to the crash.

The investigation remained active and no arrests had been made, police said.
