Phoenix police seek driver in fatal hit-and-run

Phoenix police are searching for the driver involved in a hit-and-run collision that killed a pedestrian Tuesday night.

Officers responded around 6:30 p.m. to the area of South 51st Avenue and West Baseline Road to investigate a fatal collision, according to a Phoenix police statement.

Upon arrival, officers found an injured 55-year-old man, later identified as John Franklin, in the roadway.

Franklin was taken to a hospital by the Phoenix Fire Department and was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the statement.

Detectives learned that Franklin was attempting to walk across Baseline Road when he was struck by a westbound car. The driver of the unknown vehicle fled the area before police arrived and remains outstanding, according to the statement.
