Phoenix Suns' NBA trade speculation includes Atlanta Hawks' John Collins

NBA trade speculation involving the Phoenix Suns continues to run rampant and one name appears to be picking up steam in some of the chatter.

The power forward for the Atlanta Hawks is being linked to Phoenix as a potential trade possibility according to several NBA writers.

Would Phoenix be interested in Collins? What would they have to give up for him?

Bleacher Report: John Collins would be 'bold' trade for Phoenix Suns

Greg Swartz has the Suns giving up Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder, Landry Shamet and a 2025 second-round pick for Collins.

He writes: "As good as the Suns still are, upgrading the starting power forward position from Jae Crowder would make this the best starting five in basketball, especially adding a talent like Collins to a core of Chris Paul, Devin Booker, Mikal Bridges and Deandre Ayton. Collins, 24, is under contract for the next four seasons at a reasonable $25.5 million per year and can be a valuable lob option and floor-spacer for this Suns team. He's averaged 18.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks on 55.5/38.8/81.1 percent shooting splits over the past three years in Atlanta. As much as Phoenix would like to keep Johnson, he's due for a new contract next summer and is two years older than Collins, despite being in the NBA for just three seasons."

James Piercey has Phoenix trading Landry Shamet, Dario Saric, Cam Johnson and a first-round pick in exchange for Collins.

He writes: "For the Phoenix Suns, this deal is a little simpler. In fact, it’s no more than a talent upgrade.  Of course, the Suns are in an ideal position to make one of those. This team made the NBA Finals in 2020-21. They followed that up by winning the most regular season games in the NBA in 2021-22, albeit before collapsing in the Western Conference Semifinals.  Their Game 7 performance against the Dallas Mavericks may have been disappointing, but write the Suns off as contenders at your own peril. At the same time, it wouldn’t hurt to improve the roster. This deal does exactly that.  John Collins may not be quite as accurate a shooter as Johnson, but he’s a more dynamic offensive player. With an elite vertical for his size, Collins can roll or pop out of pick-and-roll situations.

Fansided: John Collins would be interesting fit with Suns

Peter O'Keefe writes: "Collins would be an interesting piece to the Suns, particularly offensively. He’d come from a pick-and-roll partnership with Trae Young, meaning he’d into the Phoenix system fairly smoothly. The only worry would be whether having he and Deandre Ayton as pick-and-roll threats is actually counter-productive, and would ultimately limit the offensive potential of both players. As well as being a lob threat, Collins would also bring the similar shooting threat to both Crowder and Johnson. The 24-year-old shot 36.4% from three-point range last season on 3.3 attempts per game. Another big advantage would be the rebounding aspect as Collins delivers a far greater presence on the boards than Crowder or Johnson."

Joshua Buckhalter writes: "Atlanta sent a package of picks along with forward Danilo Gallinaro to the San Antonio Spurs for Murray. A subsequent trade sending Kevin Huerter to the Sacramento Kings helped to replenish some of the depth lost as well as draft capital from the Murray deal. But the Hawks bench is still looking at taking a step back given all of their significant contributors that will be suiting up for new teams next season. This deal goes a long way to replenishing that depth and more draft capital."

SB Nation: Phoenix Suns need to pursue John Collins

Dave King writes: "I think it’s time to go after John Collins of Atlanta, depending on the cost to acquire of course. Now that KD is off the table, the Suns can use their draft picks for this current team, and I believe Collins can add another wrinkle to the Suns offense that’s tough to defend. He can help on rebounding too, which is much-needed for any Suns player not playing center. Collins wouldn’t be a 20/10 guy for the Suns because of all the other scorers, but 16/9 could be a huge help. What would it take? I’d do the deal if it only cost Crowder/Shamet/pick but would hard pass if they insist on Cameron Johnson. A secondary option is to poach the Utah Jazz of Jordan Clarkson and/or Bojan Bogdanovic, but again it depends on the cost."
