Phony $50 bill allegedly used to buy teas at Market Common business

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Myrtle Beach police are investigating after a customer at a business in The Market Common used what appeared to be a phony $50 bill to buy two fruit-flavored teas.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon at the East Coast Tea Bar on Deville Street but was not reported to police until the next morning, according to a police report. Police are looking for two men in connection with the alleged incident.

Police talked to an employee who said two men came into the store together and that one of them used a $50 bill to pay for the two fruit teas, which cost $10.04, the report said. The men then left the store after getting the change for the drinks.

The employee told police they initially used a counterfeit bill detector to determine that it was real, the report said. However, the employee later looked up the markings on a real $50 bill and determined that the bill used to make the purchase was missing several of the markings.

The employee told police the two men appeared to be between 25 and 35 years old. The one who made the purchase had dreadlocks and was wearing a green jacket and green pants. He appeared to be between 160 and 170 pounds.

The second man had a shaved head and was wearing a red sweatshirt and black jeans, according to the report. He weighed between 170 and 180 pounds.
