CHESTER TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) — A Chester Township fire truck heading to the scene of an accident caused by icy roadways also spun out, a fire official said.

The truck slipped sideways Tuesday morning over the slick pavement on Caves Road, north of Mulberry Road, according to Fire Chief William Shaw.

Updates: Icy roads delay some trash pick-up

Much of Northeast Ohio was under a Winter Weather Advisory until noon on Tuesday. The National Weather Service predicted one tenth of an inch of ice buildup in some areas.

“Of course, the truck having a thousand gallons of water on it — that makes it difficult to drive in these conditions,” Shaw said. “They were pretty much idle, but then the forces of nature took over.”

Weather advisory still in effect: How long it will last

Firefighters walked the rest of the way to the scene of the accident, about a half-mile, where the car had gone off the roadway, Shaw said. No one was injured in either accident, he said.

The township’s road department spread salt in the area and firefighters were able to drive the truck away, Shaw said. It was not damaged.

The icy roads also bested a township snowplow and a police cruiser, township Police Chief Craig Young told FOX 8 News.

Police on Tuesday morning responded to nine disabled vehicles and 11 crashes, five of which caused injury, he said.
