Photo presented to Holmes County commissioners in honor of two sheriffs named Weiss

MILLERSBURG − A longtime resident presented a framed photograph of the old Holmes County Sheriff's Office, which currently serves as the commissioners' office, to the Holmes County commissioners Monday.

David Weiss presented the photograph, courtesy of Mike and Miriam DeWitt. Mariam DeWitt was a longtime employee of the County Auditor's Office, who recently died.

"It took me 20 years to get this photo," Weiss said. "I'm donating this in honor of Harry R. Weiss and Darryl Weiss, who both served as sheriffs. They both had offices and residence in this building. Darryl was the last sheriff to reside in the building back in 1976. I spent a lot of time in the building as a kid."

Harry Weiss served as sheriff from 1965-67, and Darryl Weiss served from 1967-77. Harry was David Weiss' grandfather and Darryl was his uncle.

'I just thought it should be put in this building forever'

Weiss said the photo was taken sometime around 1879, as the contract to construct the building was awarded in 1877 and they had two years to complete the building.

"It was said that it was substantially completed in that time," Weiss said. "In this picture, there are still sawhorses, ladders and stacks of lumber outside the building, so I'm dating this as circa 1879.

"I just thought it should be put in this building forever," he continued. "So I'm donating this on behalf of my uncle and Miriam DeWitt. I've been wanting to do this for 20 years, and I'm finally able to get it."

Commissioner Joe Miller was grateful to Weiss for providing the picture.

"That is very kind of you," Miller said. "We appreciate this."

Commissioners honor Holmes County Fair

In other business, the commissioners issued a proclamation honoring the Holmes County Fair for its 100th anniversary.

"The Holmes County Fair has provided an exceptional venue for members to express their talents through a variety of projects, and foster lasting friendships with like-minded individuals," the proclamation read. "Through tremendous effort and initiative, the Holmes County Fair has grown significantly over the last century, finding its permanent home at Harvest Ridge in 2016."

The proclamation added that the fair synergizes the wisdom and leadership of adults with enthusiasm and optimism of youth, fostering self-confidence, a strong work ethic and valuable life skills among young people.

A framed document will be presented by the commissioners to the fair board at the 100th anniversary celebration at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, in the Expo Center.
