EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio (WJW) — Kyrie Irving, who famously helped the Cleveland Cavaliers overcome a 3-1 series deficit to beat the Golden State Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals, recently visited a group of local high school students.

The star point guard, who now plays for the Dallas Mavericks, met with the Shaw High School boys basketball team Monday evening, reportedly offering up encouraging words to the playoff-bound team.

“This experience truly meant the world to our team,” East Cleveland City Schools said on Instagram.

East Cleveland City Schools told FOX 8 that the basketball coaches had reached out directly to Irving to see if he would be interested in speaking to their group and he came through.

The team did go on to beat Ravenna High School 66-41 in the first round of the playoffs Tuesday.

“Guess the inspirational talk worked,” the East Cleveland City Schools spokesperson told FOX 8.

Unfortunately for Irving’s current team, they were not able to beat the Cavaliers Tuesday evening (which is why Irving was in town in the first place), or more specifically Max Strus’ 59-foot basket to win the game in the final second.

Irving took to X, formerly known as Twitter, following the wild game to express his gratitude for the city of Cleveland, despite his team’s loss.

“It will always be Love from me and my Tribe, Cleveland aka Believeland,” he wrote. “No one will ever be able to take away our banner we won together. All for one, one for all. What a time.”
