PHOTOS: Nor'easter deals a snowy blow to parts of the East Coast

A potent nor'easter brought widespread school closures, flight cancellations and other impacts to southern Nova Scotia and Newfoundland Tuesday, with some areas anticipated to see much as 30 cm by Wednesday morning.

With numerous winter storm and snowfall warnings issued, drivers were urged to consider postponing non-essential travel in the hardest-hit areas of southern Nova Scotia and eastern Newfoundland.

By the early morning hours on Tuesday, significant snowfall had already accumulated in downtown Halifax, N.S. This prompted most schools to either delay their openings or just completely shut their doors first thing. As of Tuesday evening, 25 cm had fallen in downtown Halifax.

Across the Gulf, the nor'easter powered through Newfoundland, with some of the heaviest snow and blizzard-like conditions hitting Tuesday. As of Tuesday evening, 21 cm had piled up in St. John's, N.L., with 12 cm for Gander.

Widespread snowfall amounts of 20-30 cm are expected for many areas in Newfoundland by Wednesday morning.

Most schools in southern Newfoundland opted to close their doors, as well, with Metrobus pulling its drivers off the roads in St. John's. At St. John's International Airport, all flights were cancelled for Tuesday, with some early-morning flights on Wednesday already cancelled, too.
