Former Kansas City Royal center fielder Lorenzo Cain will be on the team once again but only for one day.

Cain, who was a vital player in the Royals’ 2015 World Series title win, has a one-day contract with the Royals so he can retire as member of the team. He played his last games in the MLB for Milwaukee in 2022.

The Royals acquired Cain along with former shortstop Alcides Escobar in a 2010 trade with the Brewers. He played for the Royals for seven seasons.

Cain quickly became a favorite of fans who marveled over his ability to patrol center field with lightning speed and a vacuum of a glove.

He was good with a bat too. Cain hit .533 in the Royals’ sweep of the Baltimore Orioles in the 2014 American League Championship Series. He was named the ALCS MVP for his performance.

Cain’s retirement ceremony will take place Saturday at Kauffman Stadium before the game with the Oakland Athletics. Although first pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m., Royals officials are telling fans to be in their seats by 5:40 since the retirement ceremony will take place before the first pitch. Tickets for the game have been in high demand.

Here are some of the electric moments Cain provided for fans as a member of the Kansas City Royals.

Spring training and the annual media photo day is the time to make a 60 second portrait of each player on the team as they travel from photographer to photographer. Royals catcher Salvador Perez tended to follow teammate Lorenzo Cain on this day in 2015, and as expected, enjoys bothering him. Since they were together, Kansas City Star photographer John Sleezer asked them to both be in a picture together. After one frame of them together, Salvador started in on his good friend, resulting in a fun series.
