These photos show changes to Austin's skyline yearly from ACL Fest

American-Statesman photojournalist Jay Janner has been documenting Central Texas for almost 20 years and since 2005, he's documented Austin's skyline every fall from the Great Lawn at Zilker Park.

During that year's Austin City Limits Music Festival, Janner framed a view of the stage on the east end of the grounds, with downtown beyond. Austin's tallest building that year was the Frost Bank Tower, a structure that was completed in 2004 and stands 516 feet tall. Today, it's the fifth tallest building in the city and is no longer visible from Zilker Park.

The Independent, a residential building known as the jenga tower for its offset floors, is the city's tallest, at 685 feet. A new tallest building is under construction, clearly visible in Janner's 2022 skyline photo: the 845-foot mixed-use tower at West Sixth and Guadalupe streets.

That tallest tower soon will be eclipsed by a building also under construction, the 74-story, 1,022-feet-tall tower developed by Lincoln Property Company and Kairoi Residential at 98 Red River St., which will be the tallest building in Texas.

Here's what the difference between the view of the skyline in 2005 and 2022 looks like:

Janner has taken the photo every year at the festival, with an exception in 2020 when the pandemic cancelled the festival. Take a look at the annual changes through his photo gallery here:
