Intense snow squalls took over Buffalo, N.Y. this weekend - with one lake-effect band bringing enough accumulation to bury a car south of the city.

Buffalo's Erie County declared a state of emergency last Thursday and imposed a driving ban for all but authorized emergency vehicles.

Snowfall of more than 180 cm prompted local officials on Saturday to further restrict any road travel and forced airlines to cancel flights in the Buffalo area, just ahead of the busy Thanksgiving holiday week this week.

A mixture of cold winds, unseasonably warm water temperatures, and high moisture combined to create potent, lake-effect snow bands, along with loud claps of thundersnow.

The snow attracted a lot of attention online, causing the word "Buffalo" to trend on Twitter Friday afternoon. According to the U.S. National Weather Service, conditions could persist through Monday morning.
