Former President Donald Trump’s arraignment drew both supporters and opponents of the polarizing ex-president to lower Manhattan on Tuesday.
Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first degree. A grand jury voted to indict him last week after hearing evidence that he had paid hush money to adult-film star Stormy Daniels in the run-up to the 2016 election to cover up an alleged affair and used money from his company to do so, declaring it as a business expense.
Trump arrived in New York City, his former primary residence, on Monday night after flying by private jet from Palm Beach, Fla., where he now resides. On Tuesday a motorcade took him from Trump Tower, in midtown Manhattan, to the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse downtown.
Small but enthusiastic groups with opposing views filed into a park near the courthouse hours before Trump arrived on Tuesday afternoon. The two groups "faced off," divided by police barricades, ABC News reported. According to some accounts, the anti-Trump forces appeared to be greater in number — no surprise, given that New York City voted overwhelmingly against him in 2016 and 2020.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a controversial and very outspoken backer of the former president, came to New York City to participate in a pro-Trump rally. She was reportedly drowned out by counterprotesters.
After his appearance in court, Trump went to LaGuardia Airport in Queens, N.Y., to fly back to his home at Mar-a-Lago, the Florida resort, from which he will make an address Tuesday evening.
