Delays and cancellations are expected to continue across parts of Atlantic Canada Wednesday as a potent winter storm blasts the region with heavy snow, blustery winds and rainfall.

The storm, which made its way to the Maritime provinces early Tuesday morning, is the result of a strong low-pressure system retrograding back into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This prompted Environment and Climate Change Canada to issue winter storm watches and warnings, in addition to snowfall, rainfall and wind warnings across parts of Atlantic Canada throughout Tuesday and into early Wednesday morning.

Thousands of homes and businesses have been left without power across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island in the wake of the storm’s blustery path. Many schools and highways throughout the region have been closed Tuesday and remain closed Wednesday due to heavy snow, rain and high winds.

Snow and rainfall warnings remain in place for parts of Newfoundland and Labrador in addition to some special weather statements throughout Wednesday and into Thursday morning.

Despite being the biggest snowfall event of the season for many regions across Atlantic Canada, Halifax seems to be exempt from the impacts of this winter storm as the city has seen next to no snow, continuing its least snowy season on record.
