In this photo taken Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 and released by the National Geographic Society on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, journalist Paul Salopek walks across the Afar desert of Ethiopia as part of his planned seven-year global trek from Africa to Tierra del Fuego. In Paul Salopek's first year of his trek across the globe, the reporter walked alongside his camels for days in Ethiopia without seeing glass or bricks or any other signs of modern humanity, ate a hamburger on a U.S. military base, was shadowed by minders in the Saudi desert – and now has only 20,000 miles (32,000 kilometers) to go.
