According to an old Irish tradition, once every four years women get to propose to men. Lucky women.

The story goes that in fifth century Ireland, St Bridget complained to St Patrick that women were being forced to wait too long for men to propose. St Patrick decreed that once every four years, on February 29th it would be acceptable for women to pop the big question.

According to some versions of the folk tale, if a man refused a leap day marriage proposal he was expected to pay a penalty in the form of a gown or money.
