Incredibly Raw Pictures Capture The Intimate Reality Of Birth
There are few moments in life worthier of being captured than when a baby is born. But though many parents are happy to share heavily edited post-birth pictures on social media, these award-winning shots take things to a whole other level in capturing the intimate, yet often gritty reality of giving birth.
The International Association of Professional Birth Photographers’ has recently announced the winners of their annual Image of the Year competition. The competition, which is in its 5th year, aims to celebrate ‘the beauty of birth and the skill of birth photographers.’ And the results are pretty stunning.
‘Birth photography is a highly specialised field and the choice to have the experience documented is an intensely personal decision,’ the competition organisers explain.
‘It involves the birth process, environment, the parents and those in attendance.
‘Birth photography encompasses the tears of joy, the wonder of bringing a new life into the world and celebrates family. The photographers who specialise in the field use their art to tell the story of birth.’
Hundreds of photographers submitted pictures covering everything from labour, delivery and post-birth. Winners were chosen based on technicality, emotionality, and composition, according to the announcement, and this year’s batch was particularly difficult to choose from, as so many were able to capture the intimate beauty of such an amazing moment.
