PHS notches second win over Lady Dons

Sep. 14—LAS VEGAS, N.M. — It didn't take the Portales High girls soccer team long to shake off a recent loss.

After seeing a four-match winning streak snapped two days earlier in a 4-1 defeat at Las Vegas Robertson, the Lady Rams returned on Saturday and posted a 4-0 victory over West Las Vegas.

Senior forward/midfielder Zoe Roy put PHS (5-3) in front with a goal early in the first half, and the Lady Rams finished it off with three tallies in a span of about 20 minutes during the middle of the second stanza.

It was their second win over the young Lady Dons (2-2). Portales won the earlier matchup 3-0 at home.

"They're getting a little bit better," PHS coach Bonnie Britton said of the Lady Dons. "Not many of their girls have ever played before.

"We're still trying to find the perfect dynamic, but the girls are playing some good soccer."

Portales posted a 22-8 advantage in shots on goal in the match. Eighth-grader goalkeeper Lissette Gomez earned the shutout for the Lady Rams.

Portales was slated to return to action on Tuesday night with a 6:30 p.m. clash at Clovis. On Thursday, both PHS squads are slated to entertain Ruidoso, with the girls going first at 3 p.m.

Lady Cats earn win, tie in Albuquerque — After playing to a scoreless draw on Saturday at Sandia, Clovis High's girls improved to 8-1-1 with an 8-1 rout of host Manzano on Monday.

Senior forward Nevaeh Coronado and junior forward/midfielder Caley Adams each scored twice for the Lady Cats, who pulled away from the Monarchs (2-4) after leading just 2-1 at halftime. Senior midfielders Luisa Chavez and Illeana Griego, senior forward Madyson Crowder and senior defender Emily Byrd each added a goal.

"We started off slow, but we played pretty well in the second half," coach Ray Rodriguez said. "We were a lot more patient, and we exploited the weaknesses in their defense."

Neither side could break through in Saturday's matchup, which remained scoreless through two overtimes. The Lady Cats posted a 6-4 edge in shots on goal over the Matadors (4-2-1), with sophomore Aja Gonzales earning the shutout in goal for Clovis.

After Tuesday's tilt at PHS, the Lady Cats' next outing is at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday against Roswell Goddard at Leon Williams Stadium.

CHS boys drop a pair — A late goal by Artesia senior Darius Bishop lifted the Bulldogs (6-3-1) to a 1-0 victory over the CHS boys on Saturday at Artesia.

The loss was a frustrating one for Wildcats coach Greg Trujillo.

"We give up a late goal after totally dominating the whole game," he said. "They had the one player (Bishop) that was pretty good. We let our guard down, and that's all it took."

On Monday, the Cats traveled to Rio Grande and fell to 2-8 for the season with a 6-1 setback against the Ravens (5-2). The contest had originally been slated for Saturday.

No other information on the match was available at press time.

The Cats return to action on Tuesday when it hosts Portales at 6:30 p.m. at Leon Williams Stadium.
