Tuesday is Pi Day, the annual celebration every March 14 for all things both Pi (the number) and pie (the food.)

Pi, often shortened to 3.14, represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Although we commonly refer to it in its shortened form, Pi goes on forever. According to the Guinness World Records, the most accurate value of pi is 62,831,853,071,796 digits, achieved by the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons in Switzerland in August 2021.

So, whether you're a fan of the number Pi or just a fan of really good pie in all forms, here's how and where to celebrate Pi Day this year.

What is Pi?

Pi is represented by the Greek letter π and shortened to 3.14. It has been around for almost 4,000 years, first calculated by the ancient Babylonians who calculated the area of a circle by taking three times the square of its radius.

According to the Rhind Papyrus, the area of a circle in ancient Egypt was calculated by a formula that gave the approximate value of 3.1605 for Pi.

Archimedes of Syracuse, the ancient Greek mathematician, first approximated the area of a circle by using the Pythagorean Theorem.

The Greek letter π began to be widely used by mathematicians in the 1700s.

When was the first Pi Day?

Pi Day was created by Larry Shaw, a former staff physicist at the Exploratorium museum in San Francisco, California, in 1988. On March 14 at 1:59 p.m. (the numbers that follow 3.14 in Pi), Shaw and his wife, Catherine, set up a table at the museum with fruit pies and a tea urn for the celebration.

The day became an annual tradition for the Exploratorium, and was picked up by others across the world. In 2009, Pi Day became an official U.S. holiday.
