PIAA boys basketball state playoff schedule, results and recaps

Here is the schedule of PIAA boys basketball state playoff games involving Courier Times/Intelligencer schools with roundups and recaps of completed contests:

Class 6A

First round, March 11

Archbishop Wood (District 12, 3rd place) 61, Central Bucks East (1-5) 37: The Patriots, who reached 20 wins for the first time since 2006-07, trailed by just one point (27-26) on a 3-pointer by junior Jake Cummiskey in the third quarter, but the Vikings went on a 34-11 run the rest of the way for a 61-37 victory at Archbishop Ryan. Wood's defense was its strongest suit for most of the game.

Senior forward Carson Howard led Wood (17-8) with a game-high 15 points, while junior guard Jalil Bethea added 13 in front of the Syracuse staff that included new head coach Adrian Autry and assistant Gerry McNamara. Sophomore Milan Dean also contributed 11 points for the Vikings. Cummiskey paced the Patriots, who captured their third straight Suburban One League Colonial Division title and won a school-record 24 games, with 14 points.

North Penn (1-8) 64, Central (12-2) 52: The Knights secured the first boys basketball state playoff win in school history by downing Central at West Philadelphia High. As a result, 20-8 North Penn will face District One ninth-placer Coatesville in the second round. Coatesville prevailed 68-58 at District 2 champion Scranton. Senior Ryan Deininger led the Knights with 18 points, junior Norman Gee chipped in 10 and junior Teddy McAllister had 9 points.

Second round, March 15

Archbishop Wood (12-3) 72, Chambersburg (3-6) 45: Wood was dominant, taking a 42-17 halftime lead en route to the one-sided victory. Bethea tallied a game-high 24 points for the 18-8 Vikings. Visiting Chambersburg (16-11) surprised District One champion Plymouth Whitemarsh 68-56 in the first round. Wood reached the state championship game a year ago, falling to PCL rival Roman Catholic. The two schools would meet in the semifinals if they keep winning.

Coatesville (1-9) 61, North Penn (1-8) 55: After leading by nine points in the first half, North Penn struggled with 20-9 Coatesville's pressure in the second half on the way to the defeat at Pottstown High. Junior Teddy McAllister had 12 points for the 20-9 Knights, while seniors Ryan Zeltt and Ryan Deininger added 11 and 10, respectively. North Penn had downed Coatesville 64-60 in the second round of the District One playoffs on February 21 to guarantee a state berth. McAllister led the host Knights with 14 points in that contest.

Quarterfinals, March 18

Archbishop Wood (12-3) 78, Coatesville (1-9) 64: The Vikings reached the semifinals behind 31 points from Bethea and 21 by Howard. Wood (19-8) has won its first three state playoff games by a combined 65 points to earn another meeting with defending state champion Roman Catholic, which dispatched District 11 champ Parkland 53-35 after trailing 20-17 at halftime in the quarterfinals.

Semifinals, March 21

Roman Catholic (12-1) 66, Archbishop Wood (12-3) 56: Senior guard Xzayvier Brown scored 15 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter to propel Roman past Wood at Bensalem. Brown had the Cahillites' first 11 points of the final period to turn a tight game into a double-digit lead. Vikings junior guard Jalil Bethea contributed 23 points and 13 rebounds. Wood (19-9) had won six of its last seven, with the only defeat during that span to Roman (66-59) in the Catholic League semifinals February 22 at the Palestra. Roman (27-3), which also topped the Vikings 77-56 during the regular season, upended Wood 78-65 in the state championship game a year ago. Roman handled District 11 champ Parkland 53-35 in the quarterfinals.

Class 5A

First round, March 10

Imhotep Charter (12-1) 85, Holy Ghost Prep (1-6) 33: Imhotep Charter (26-3) and Kentucky-bound forward Justin Thomas were simply too much for the 14-13 Firebirds at Abraham Lincoln High. Imhotep will face District 3 fifth-placer Muhlenberg, which downed District One runner-up Unionville 64-54, in the second round on March 14.

Class 2A

First round, March 11

Dock Mennonite (1-1) 59, Antietam (3-2) 40: Dock (26-2) followed its second District One championship in four years with a 19-point victory over visiting Antietam (13-12). Senior Nathan Lapp tallied 19 points and senior Hoyt Bultje contributed 18 points and 15 rebounds. Senior Lane Bergey added 8 points.

Second round, March 15

Dock Mennonite (1-1) 60, Sankofa Freedom (12-2) 44: Lapp scored 28 points to become Dock's all-time leading scorer (girls and boys) with 1,290 career points. Vaughn Martin contributed 16 points and Bultje chipped in 8 points and 10 rebounds for the Pioneers (27-2). Dock converted 19 of 26 free throws in the fourth quarter to close out the victory. Sankofa (14-13) opened states by winning at District 11 runner-up Tri-Valley 65-59.

Quarterfinals, March 18

Holy Cross (2-1) 64, Dock Mennonite (1-1) 57: Dock's season ended in the quarterfinals at East Stroudsburg South after leading 38-31 in the third quarter. Lapp and Martin had 19 points apiece for the Pioneers. Mike Fergus' team, which finished with a 27-3 record and set a school record for wins, also reached the quarterfinals in 2020 when Lapp was a freshman before COVID-19 shut down the PIAA tourney. Holy Cross (22-5) had downed District 4 champion Muncy 66-38 in the second round.
