PIAA FIELD HOCKEY: Honesdale faces challenges in quarterfinal round
Nov. 12—It's been a roller-coaster week for Honesdale's field hockey team, which will take on Emmaus in the state field hockey quarterfinals Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at East Stroudsburg South High School.
The team won the District 2 Class 3A championship, claimed its first PIAA playoff game with two goals in the final 1:10 of the opening-round, 5-4 win over Spring-Ford, and now will try to regroup after Saturday morning's funeral for classmate and football player Samson Fluck, who died Sunday after a brief illness.
"We're trying to rally as a community to get through this," Honesdale coach Becca Maciejewski said. "One parent told me it's been a week they'll never forget.
"Most of the girls on the team are going to the funeral. Hopefully it will help muster a little extra bit of heart."
This will be the second meeting between the teams. Emmaus rolled to an 11-0 win over Honesdale in the 2020 playoffs, which in the COVD-19 marred season, marked Honesdale's first trip to the state playoffs.
"(Emmaus coach) Sue Butz-Stavin said she knew she was going to see (Honesdale) again," Maciejewski said. "This time it's with a team that's more seasoned and can compete. We're excited for the opportunity."
The Green Hornets has been a fixture in the state title game, winning 14, including the last two, in Butz-Stavin's 47-year tenure.
