Piazza San Marco Flooded After Venice Flood Barrier Not Used

Flooding inundated Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy, on December 8, after the MOSE flood barrier, a newly installed flood-defense system, was not activated by local authorities, reports said.

Local reports said MOSE (which stands for Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico) was activated the following day, Wednesday, December 9, and would remain in use until Saturday.

La Repubblica reported that officials were reviewing the events of December 8 to assess the need for procedural changes.

According to local media, the Procurator of Piazza San Marco, Carlo Alberto Tesserin, said “the basilica of San Marco does not stand up to these continuous high waters that bring salt that will eat the basilica.”
