How we picked the Gannett Kansas All-State, Honorable Mention Academic teams

The Gannett Kansas All-State Academic Team honors and recognizes the state's highest performing and most promising graduating high school seniors.

High school principals and counselors from around the state nominate one senior from their respective schools, and those nominees then apply for the honor by completing two short-answer essays.

This year, the essay prompts asked students to tell the story of the last day that changed their lives, as well as a headline they envision 25 years from now and the steps they'd take to make those headlines reality.

The essays were a major portion of the final decision to name a student to the All-State Academic Team, although other criteria — such as ACT score, GPA, involvement and leadership experiences — were considered. Forty students were named to the All-State Academic Team, while another 80-plus students received honorable mention recognition.
