Pickleball courts coming to Moscone Park playground, to be limited at Presidio Wall

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — New pickleball courts are coming to Moscone Park in San Francisco, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (SFRPD) announced Wednesday. But while these new courts will be added in the Marina District, the city plans to cut down on existing pickleball courts at the Presidio Wall.

The new courts are expected to open in the Marina District this spring. Moscone Park is located at 1800 Chestnut St. SFRPD plans to make two tennis courts next to the Marina Branch Library “dual-lined,” which will create six pickleball courts.

The move follows what the parks department did at Carl Larsen Park, where it turned a tennis court and a basketball court into eight pickleball courts. Pickleball’s popularity is rising fast, and the parks department is working to set up courts across the city.

“Pickleball is an incredibly social and fun sport and its growth over the last years proves that,” SFRPD General Manager Phil Ginsburg said. “We’re moving as fast as we can to get the ball rolling to identify new potential sites and we will continue to work closely with the pickleball community and our other sports communities to find creative solutions that work for everyone.”

Meanwhile, not everyone has been happy with the pickleball courts at the Presidio Wall. Residents of the area created a petition complaining about the noise created by the sport.

The parks department allowed the courts to go up years ago, but now it is trying to take them down. It is asking the pickleball community to remove the unpermitted rolling nets from two of the courts by Friday.

However, the courts attract flocks of pickleball players, and the pickleball community hopes the changes can be delayed.

“Parks and Rec has been great and really trying to build other courts in San Francisco, but there’s not that many in one place. There’s usually one or two, so that’s why this area is so special to us because it’s really about building community,” said pickleball player Veronica Taisch.
