Our Picks from Beyonce's Stylist's New E-Shop

It all started as a question on Zerina Akers’s Instagram profile: “What are your favorite black-owned brands?” Akers, a New York–based fashion creative who is best known as stylist to one Beyoncé Knowles-Carter (not to mention Ava DuVernay, and Yara Shahidi) has worked in the fashion industry her entire career, from her start in magazines’ closets to dressing stars for the red carpet. She also had a heavy hand in the fashion and jewelry choices behind Beyoncé’s Black is King. So, when she popped that seminal question, people answered—and came looking for more. The audience became too large to be contained on social media, so Akers founded her own site, Black Owned Everything.co.

“The Black dollar has power,” she says bluntly. And her mission of supporting and celebrating BIPOC businesses has become a powerful force in the industry. The website offers a collection of impeccable “ready-to-wear,” home goods, art, and accessories. Akers pays homage to the complexity of Black lives through all the brands represented on her site. For example, Timeless Goods offers art puzzles by photographer Cary Fagan that focus on identifying beauty in its simple elegance, whether in nature or in a girl’s braids. Another brand, Johnny Nelson, crafts its designs around the history of Black America by forging gold plated brass into the faces of important black figures.
