Pickup truck kills bicyclist in Lakewood hit and run

LAKEWOOD — A fatal hit-and-run is under investigation in Lakewood after a pickup truck struck a bicyclist Thursday night, authorities said.

At 8:12 p.m., a full-size, four-door, "Pepsi Blue" pickup truck hit a cyclist at the intersection of Route 70 and New Hampshire Avenue in Lakewood, according to a Lakewood Police Department press release.

The truck may have also had headlight damage on the front driver's side.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer and Lakewood Township Chief of Police Gregory Meyer are asking for the community's help in the investigation.

"The vehicle was last seen traveling west on Route 70 toward Manchester Township and is believed to be involved the fatal hit-and-run of a Hispanic male that was riding his bicycle westbound on Route 70 on the south shoulder of the roadway," the statement said.

Information on the whereabouts of the truck and/or driver should be reported to Detective Andrew Harnett of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit at 732-929-2027, ext. 3790, or Lakewood Township Police Lieutenant Leroy Marshall at 732-363-0200, ext. 5349.
