He was able to pick himself up off the floor and escape before being seriously hurt.

The incident was caught on camera by wildlife photographer Chris Golightly at Wollaton Hall and Deer Park.

The British Deer Association advises people to stay at least 50 metres from any deer, or 100 during the rutting season, which runs from late September to early November.

It gives the following safety advice on its website: “If you find a deer advancing towards you or acting in a threatening manner, do not shout or wave at it.

“Back off slowly if possible; the deer may be satisfied that you have left its personal zone. Do not run, though, as this may trigger the animal into chasing you.”
