Piedmont's Jack Hayes wins Class 3A Back of the Year at Alabama Mr. Football banquet

The third time was the charm for Piedmont's Jack Hayes.

The Bulldogs junior was recognized as the Class 3A Back of the Year by the Alabama Sportswriters Association on Thursday. Hayes beat out Montgomery Catholic’s Jeremiah Cobb and Montgomery Academy's Jashawn Cooper.

The banquet was held in Montgomery on Thursday.

Hayes' older brother Taylor won the award in 2015 and 2016.

Last year, Hayes was edged out by Ike Rowell of Fyffe; two years ago Flomaton's Daquan Johnson won the honors.

Hayes was 8-of-17 for 123 yards and three touchdowns and rushed 36 times for 143 yards and two touchdowns as the Bulldogs erased a 23-point halftime in the state championship, winning 35-33 over Montgomery Academy.

Hayes completed 160 of 258 passes for 2,673 yards, 38 touchdowns and just two interceptions. He also rushed for 1,027 yards and 21 touchdowns.

His teammate Landon Smart was a finalist for 3A Lineman of the Year. Smart had 152 tackles and nine tackles for loss.

Montgomery Catholic's TJ Dudley won the Lineman of the Year honors for 3A.

No other Gadsden area players were nominated.

Thompson's Ryan Peppins won the honors for Mr. Football.
