Pig Plop successful in spite of dropped plop

Roughly 200 spectators turned out at the Johnson Appliance parking lot on Labor Day to witness the first ever “Hog Capital Pig Plop.” The fundraiser, sponsored by both the Kewanee Chamber of Commerce and the Kewanee Kiwanis Club, was a chance for three participants to win cash and prizes.

In all, 1,800 rubber pig sponsorships were purchased for $5 each or a litter of five pigs for $20, and then dropped from the basket of a lift onto a bullseye. The top three winners received prizes.

But finding the winner wasn’t an easy task, as the pink pigs ended up in a pile in the middle of the “pig pen,” and judges, including the Executive Director of the KCOC Mark Mikenas and the World Festival Queens and their court, were left to sort it all out. Among the pile, the three winners pigs that landed closest to the target were located.

The first place award of $500 went to Patrick Kolata. The second place award of $225 was given to Lori Christensen and the third place prize of a basketball hoop was given to Brandi Ince.

Pam Johnson, president of the Kiwanis Club, said that the event will most likely stick around next year. The Pig Plop, the brainchild of Brock Tumbleson and Mark Mikenas, was well-received by the public.

“We hope so,” Johnson said when asked if the event will become an annual one. “We think so. It was successful. We’ll have to fine-tune it. The first time is always a learning experience.”

It’s too early to know what the proceeds for the fundraiser will be, she said. After expenses, the cash raised from the Pig Plop will be divided between both the KCOC and the Kiwanis Club, which will use the money to fund community and children’s projects.

The event was sponsored by Golnick-Shueneman Funeral Home, Breedloves Sporting Goods, B & B Printing, J & D Tree Service, Johnson Appliance, The Daily Fix Nutrition, Union Federal Savings & Loan, Edward Jones and the Peoples National Bank of Kewanee.
