Pilot gets blind dog a new life after he’s dropped off at shelter, Tennessee photos show
When pilot Nick Hermann saw a 15-year-old blind dog needed help making it to his new home, he knew what needed to be done.
Hunter, who is blind in one eye and can’t see up close with the other, has now been given a new lease on life.
When he was just a pup, he was taken to a West Virginia shelter after he was found near a local power plant in 2010, Brad Marlow, the owner of Misfit Hounds in Hampton, Tennessee, told McClatchy News in a phone interview. After gathering Hunter’s medical information, Marlow said the dog was likely about 1 year old at the time.
Hunter was adopted from that shelter, but he was recently surrendered again after a person believed to be his owner claimed Hunter was a stray, Marlow said.
“When I asked the owner how long Hunter had been hanging around, they said 10 years,” Marlow told McClatchy News.
Once Hunter arrived at the West Virginia animal shelter, staff members started scrambling for a way to help the old pup.
Marlow asked the public if there was anyone who could bring Hunter from West Virginia to Misfit Hounds in Tennessee – that’s when Hermann stepped in.
“Nick saw the story and said ‘I can do that’ and we worked it out,” Marlow said.
Hermann is a pilot and has offered in the past to help transport pups through Pilots N Paws, a dog transportation service.
This time, however, Hermann offered to take Hunter to Misfit Hounds on his own and eventually flew him from the vet to Tennessee.
Hermann and Hunters’ flight time was about two and a half hours, according to WCYB.
“Hunter did great on the flight and he even had a news crew waiting on him when he landed,” Misfit Hounds said on Facebook.
Hunter arrived at Misfit Hounds on May 19 and now lives with more than 40 dogs in an open kennel environment, where the pups are only in crates when they’re being fed, Marlow said.
“For the first few days I separated him so he could decompress,” Marlow said.
Hunter, who Marlow said is “very loving and affectionate” seems to be doing well.
“This is speculation but I think he might’ve been close with a child over the years. He’s so cuddly, it’s not foreign to him,” Marlow said. “I sleep on the floor with the dogs and he always cuddles up next to me.”
Although Hunter is thriving, he makes little mistakes here and there, but that hasn’t changed the fact that he might have a potential adopter.
“Never again will he be alone, unwanted, or unloved,” the group said on Facebook. “He’ll be a Misfit.”
Hampton is about 300 miles east of Nashville.
