Pilot OK after crash in Livingston County

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A pilot escaped unscathed after crashing his plane into a thicket of trees Monday in Livingston County.

The Green Oak Charter Township Police Department says the crash happened at a small private airfield a few miles east of Whitmore Lake around 1 p.m.

The plane ended up caught in the trees, nose down, several feet off of the ground. The pilot, a 72-year-old man from Canton, was able to climb out of the plane and get to the ground safely.

The pilot told first responders that he was preparing to land when a gust of wind caused him to tip to the left, clipping the trees with his wing before cartwheeling into them. The plane suffered serious damage but did not leak any fuel or other material.

Local authorities have reached out to the Federal Aviation Administration to continue the investigation.
